What is Drinking Right?

Drinking Right is a monthly social gathering that originated when a few Milwaukee bloggers got together to, well, drink. Originally intended as a one-off to celebrate Day Without (Illegal) Immigrants, it quickly became apparent that we needed to do it again. At the suggestion of someone unable to make such a monumental event--and was therefore tormented via phone--the regular gathering was officially christened Drinking Right.

As an aside, the original idea was Drinking Conservatively. Somehow that seemed, well, inaccurate)

Now you may think that Drinking Right is simply a right-wing, gun-totin', warmongering, Bush-loving, neocon takeoff of Drinking Liberally. Not true! It started in Wisconsin, where concealed carry is not legal, so the gun totin' thing, for the most part, doesn't apply.

In truth, Drinking Right was inspired by those Drinking Liberally folks. We couldn't let them have all the fun. There's no reason those of us leaning right shouldn't have an opportunity to discuss politics in a casual environment over several dozen cocktails. Why, if it weren't for them, far too many of us wouldn't have an excuse for being in a bar on a Tuesday!

Well, a legitimate excuse.

Now, after only a few events, Drinking Right seems to be rapidly growing. Although made up primarily of bloggers, Drinking Right is starting to attract the notice of people who don't sit at their computers in pajamas. In early August, WUWM will feature a story on it's At 10 news magazine about Drinking Right and Drinking Liberally. Hopefully, this exposure will shoot attendance through the roof to something like 15 people!

Someone asked if Drinking Right was just a bunch of conservatives sitting around talking politics. Not at all! Drinking Right is simply a way for people to get together in an informal environment and discuss whatever topics come to mind. There are no speakers, no pre-defined topics or "special guests." It's open to everyone and everyone's encouraged to attend.

Of course, there's also the drinking. Because Drinking Right isn't about being right.

It's about being drinking.
